Kraken has been running since 2011, longer than almost any exchange still in business. Over that time it has avoided a major hack, which is rare in this industry. This Kraken review looks at what that track record is worth today, and whether the July 2026 fee changes make it harder to recommend.
Kraken review: the security case
Security is the strongest argument for Kraken. It publishes regular proof of reserves using a Merkle tree, which lets customers check that their balances are included. Coin Bureau reports that Kraken holds a CER.live AAA rating.
CoinGecko records no incidents and gives the exchange a 10/10 trust score. Kraken also offers 24/7 support, which matters when something goes wrong with a deposit or withdrawal.
No exchange is immune to attack, and a clean history is no promise about the future. Still, about 15 years without a major breach stands out, especially after the large hacks at other exchanges in 2025 and 2027.
Licences across three regions
Kraken is one of the few exchanges with strong coverage in the US, UK and EU at once:
- United States: registered with FinCEN as a money services business
- United Kingdom: registered with the FCA
- European Union: MiCA licence from the Central Bank of Ireland, granted in June 2025
- Canada: Restricted Dealer in Ontario, according to CoinGecko
The company is based in San Francisco. Its US service is not available in New York or Maine.
What the fees look like now
In July 2026 Kraken moved to cross-platform fee tiering. At Tier 1 on Kraken Pro, crypto pairs cost 0.40% for makers and 0.80% for takers. Stablecoin and FX pairs are cheaper at 0.20% maker and 0.20% taker.
Those entry rates are high next to offshore rivals that start around 0.10%. There is no discount token to soften them. Costs fall as your volume rises, so check the official Kraken Pro fee page to see where you would land.
Who feels the fees most
Small, frequent traders pay the most in relative terms. Long-term investors who buy a few times a year will notice the cost less than the security and regulatory benefits. Traders who stick to stablecoin pairs also pay less, at 0.20% each way.
Markets and products
Kraken's coin list is large for a regulated exchange. CoinGecko tracks 710 coins and 1,393 pairs as of November 2026.
The product range covers:
- Spot trading on Kraken Pro
- Futures and margin
- Staking
- xStocks, which are tokenised stocks
- An OTC desk for large trades
xStocks deserve a mention. They bring tokenised stocks into the same account as your crypto, so you can hold both without a second provider. Product access depends on your country, though, so not every item will appear in your account.
How to join
Sign up with an email address, verify your identity and fund the account. Beginners can start with simple buys, then move to Kraken Pro once they are comfortable with order books, because the Pro screen takes some getting used to.
Final word
Kraken suits investors who rank safety and regulation above the lowest possible price. It combines a long, clean record, public proof of reserves and licences in major markets with a wide range of coins.
The downside is cost at the entry level, plus a Pro interface that can feel complex. High-frequency traders on small balances may find cheaper venues. For everyone else, Kraken remains one of the more trustworthy places to trade crypto.
