In January 2025 KuCoin pleaded guilty in the United States to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. It agreed to pay about $297 million in penalties and to leave the US market for two years, according to the US Department of Justice. Any KuCoin review has to put that alongside the features that made the exchange popular.

The compliance problem

The US case is not the only issue. KuCoin EU received a MiCA licence from Austria's FMA in November 2025. Three months later, in February 2026, the FMA imposed a ban on new business at KuCoin EU over concerns about anti-money-laundering and compliance staffing, as reported by Cointelegraph.

In practice this means the European arm is licensed but restricted from taking on new business. The main company is registered in Seychelles, according to CoinGecko. US residents cannot use the platform.

For many users this history is reason enough to look elsewhere. For others, the product still has a lot to offer.

What KuCoin does well

KuCoin built its reputation on two things: a deep bench of altcoins and easy automation.

Coin range

CoinGecko tracks 810 coins and 962 pairs on KuCoin as of November 2026. That puts it among the broader exchanges for smaller tokens, which brings both opportunity and higher risk.

Trading bots

Bots are built into the platform rather than offered through a third party. You can run an automated strategy without connecting outside software. Copy trading is also available if you would rather follow other users.

Automation is not a shortcut to profit. A bot follows its rules exactly, even when the market turns against you, and fees on frequent trades add up. Test any strategy with a small amount first and review its settings regularly.

KuCoin review of fees

At the LV0 level, spot trading in Class A coins costs 0.10% for makers and 0.10% for takers. Paying fees with KuCoin's own token, KCS, gives a 20% discount.

For a trader running many small bot trades, the discount can matter more than the headline rate. A 20% cut turns a 0.10% fee into 0.08%.

Other coin classes and tiers have their own rates, so check KuCoin's fee page for the market you plan to trade.

Security record

In September 2020 hackers stole about $280 million from KuCoin's hot wallets. KuCoin said 84% of the affected funds were recovered and that users were covered for the loss, according to The Block.

CoinGecko records no more recent incidents. The 2020 response was handled well, but the hack remains part of the record. Today, the bigger risks for users are regulatory rather than technical.

Opening an account

Sign up, complete identity checks and deposit crypto or use P2P. US residents are excluded, and the FMA ban limits new business at the EU entity, so confirm which entity you would be joining before you register.

KuCoin review: pros and cons
The main strengths and weaknesses of KuCoin.

Is KuCoin worth the risk?

KuCoin still offers a wide altcoin choice, built-in bots and low base fees with a KCS discount. Those features keep it relevant for experienced traders hunting smaller tokens.

The regulatory baggage is heavy, though. A US criminal plea, a forced market exit and an EU new-business ban point to compliance weaknesses that a low fee cannot offset. Investors who value regulatory standing should give those facts more weight than the coin count.
